CURRENT OPEN POSITIONS: 

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONAL

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach provides academic support, sports, arts, S.T.E.M., career readiness, and leadership programs through after-school programs at its thirteen site locations in Long Beach and surrounding communities. The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach is to inspire, enable, and support all youth to realize their full potential as successful, responsible, and impactful members of the community.



TITLE: Youth Development Professional (non-exempt)


HOURS: Up to 25 hours per week. Monday through Friday between *12pm-6pm.

*Hours may vary depending on school dismissal times.

For employment consideration, candidates must be available to work at 5 days per week.



PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Youth Development Professional plans, implements, supervises and

evaluates youth activities provided in specific Boys & Girls Clubs program areas, such as

Education & Career Development, The Arts, Sports Fitness & Recreation, Health & Life Skills,

Character & Leadership, Development or Specialized Initiatives.


Our Youth Development Professionalists are role models and mentors, making a positive impact

in a child’s life every single day. Together with their team, they work to foster the 5 key elements

to Boys & Girls Clubs: The first element, a safe, positive environment, sets the foundation for

life-changing youth development work. The next key element, fun and a sense of belonging

keep youth engaged. The last three elements – supportive relationships, opportunities and

expectations, and recognition – help transform time spent at the Club into experiences that

change young lives.


Being an After School Youth Leader is meaningful work. Some of the key responsibilities include:


  • Supervise members in the program area; ensure safety of members, positive values, positive and ethical behavior by providing quality programming and maintain appearance of the Club at all times.
  • Provide guidance to members and act as a role model.
  • Deal effectively with members concerning behavior and discipline issues.
  • Complete daily lesson plans and implement a range of programs and activities that are fun, creative, instructional, and that incorporate team-building skills.
  • Establish positive relationships with children and their parents/guardians.
  • Promote and stimulate program participation.
  • Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for members as directed by program guidelines and expectations.
  • Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the Club at all times.
  • Prepare activity reports as required.
  • Assist in maintaining inventories of all program equipment and supplies; ensure all related supplies and equipment are maintained and in good order. Clean program areas after each usage.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings.
  • Attend training events as scheduled.
  • Maintain administrative duties through email and submit reports and attendance as required.
  • May participate in special programs and/or events.


SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:


  • 48+ college credits or pass School District NCLB test
  • Experience working with children (volunteer work counts)
  • Knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to plan and implement quality activities for youth.
  • Ability to organize and supervise youth in a safe environment.
  • Candidates must be 18 years or older.
  • Valid State Driver License or California ID card
  • Must clear Background check and drug screen
  • CPR & First Aid Certifications - required within 2 mothns of hire date (we provide certification courses)

JOB TYPE: Part-time


PAY: $17.00-$18.50 per hour (Depending on education and experience).
