Club Members, We Got You!
OUR IMPACT DURING COVID
The recent months have not been easy for our community and our Club members. For seven months, our members have experienced disastrous disruptions to their daily lives. Their schools closed and their recreational activities were cancelled. They are experiencing general anxiety and fear related to COVID-19 and its health implications, and may be isolated from family, friends, and support people. It is a devastating situation for so many of our youth with potential for life-long repercussions.
More than ever, Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach members have needed the consistency of our programs and the support and guidance of our staff. We are successfully reaching our goal during this crisis by support members as they navigate school, and life in general, through our distance learning centers, virtual programming, grab & go meal and supply events, and virtual tutoring/mentoring.
We currently have 3 Clubhouses open 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. and are serving 30-60 Club members at each site all day. They are safe spaces where members can actively participate in their distance learning programs during the school day. BGCLB provides supervision by our trained staff, who help members with staying focused and on task, technology and printing needs, following class schedules, and meeting deadlines. Meals and snacks are also provided. After online classes, staff is available to assist with homework and oversee after school enrichment. To ensure the safety of our members and staff, we limit capacity, practice social distancing, check temperatures, require face masks, and undertake frequent hand washing and surface cleaning.
Hear more about our impact from our Club members and their families:
"The Westside Center of boys & girls club has been a blessing to my family without them I would probably be unemployed and down to one income family. To be able to send our kids to a safe place and also have the help needed to assist them with their online classes lets us stress less in this pandemic. Definitely God sent. Thank you guys for all your hard work ❤️ ❤️ ❤️"
Ms. Gaytan (Club member Guardian)
(Korea R. 17) Cabrillo HS / Class of 2021 attends our Westside clubhouse and participates in our Brent's Club (Drug and Alcohol awareness) LIT and Keystone leadership programs. She has been coming to our clubhouse since her freshman year (3 years). Her desire is to make a difference in her life and her families. Keria (Mom) has indicated that having the club's support has truly been a blessing in her daughters life. She has a newborn and her focus can't be all on her daughter, but the club gives her the opportunity to support that she can count on.
We had set up a Virtual Birthday party for her, because she said Korea was having a hard time and needed to feel connected with her peers.
Moreover, the Brent's Club Influencers Course "Cultivating Self Confidence & Developing Empathy" was a tremendous source of support for her during this time of COVID 19, she was suffering from depression and thoughts of hopelessness. But the numerous activities, like the "Digital Diary" and the various challenges allowed her to feel connected with other teens to have a positive outlook for herself.
She indicated that with this Virtual program (Brent's Club) and the support she received from the Club, has provided the confidence to handle any challenge during COVID 19.
Ironically, she is a strong candidate for our Youth of the Year and is currently running for ASB President at Cabrillo HS, holding a GPA of 3.6 and wants to aspire to be a Civil Rights Attorney.
Her future is Great indeed!!
During this pandemic, the club has helped me tremendously with watching my child while I had to go in for work. Great staff, great activities, and food is provided for the kids. That is very helpful. Adrian has been professional, a people’s person, and a problem solver during this pandemic. Overall, I am thankful for what the club has provide for me and my child.

I hope you're keeping safe and healthy! I just wanted to take a second to let you know how helpful your "club at home" web page (https://www.bgclublb.org/ClubAtHome) has been for my family and me. My mother moved in with us before the COVID outbreak this February, and then with twin girls we've definitely had our hands full (LOL).. But, I was able to find some excellent resources to for the new school year thanks to your links (their school district is doing a mix of in person & remote learning) We especially enjoy the virtual field trips! Stephanie and Joanna love animals & the outdoors so they really liked the aquarium and zoo tours. its been wonderful grandma/granddaughter bonding time!
