Who We Are
Mentor: Trent Bryson
Mentee: Miles Davis
I met Miles Davis when He was Runner up Youth of the Year in 2016. He graduated High School not long after and met with me to discuss becoming a sports agent. Unfortunately, his grammar was awful and I encouraged him to enroll in LB City College and specifically take English. Miles was not a fan of my suggestion as English wasn’t of any interest to him but begrudgingly enrolled. While being in college he worked at Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA coaching basketball. He have met monthly for the past 5 years discussing life goals etc.
During the pandemic, Miles wrote a children’s book that described one of his seasons as a coach and specifically about having team that went undefeated all year until the final game where their over confidence hurt them and they lost. The team they had beat up on mid-year worked hard and got the upset in the final game. Miles did all illustrations and writing. I worked a little with him on the editing but he did most of the work. I then sent to a contact at Entrepreneur for publishing.
Last week, Entrepreneur magazine sign Miles Davis to their first Children’s Book publishing deal ever. He will get a healthy advance that changes his life and a royalty deal moving forward.
I can’t tell you how proud I am of Miles and it just shows that a little tough love (as we do with our own kids), the right encouragement, and a contact or two can fundamentally change someone’s life. If you have been considering becoming more involved, I would encourage you to do it this year, where kids have been isolated from the outside world more than ever before.
