Phillip Redd, Brent's Club Program Director

I remember like it was yesterday moving to San Pedro and not having any friends. My mom signed me up for the Boys & Girls Club of San Pedro and that's when things in my life forever changed. During my journey at the club I was a very active member. I coached my first basketball team at the age of 15 and was president of LIT and Keystone. In 2002 I was a finalist for youth of the year and won a $2500 scholarship named Mr. San Pedro through the Lions Club. I attended Cal State Fullerton after high school and lived in the dorms. After three years I realized there was a void in my life. I missed mentoring kids and coaching basketball. At the age of 21 I accepted a teen coordinator position at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fullerton. After almost two years of service I decided to head back to my home club in San Pedro.

During this exciting time I accomplished many things including: advising an all male mentorship group called brotherhood, ran a cyber cafe, picked up members from various schools, and was the athletic director of the San Pedro clubhouse. In 2014 I graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills and accepted the position of Athletic and Transportation DIrector for the entire organization of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor that included (14) sites. It was a life changing moment to coordinate athletic leagues and activities for 2500+ youth in south Los Angeles. We created a study hall program for student-athletes to improve their grades and stressed the importance of having a clear plan in the future. I taught college bound workshops for prospective four-year university students and assisted them in their quest to attend their dream school. My final project was planning, organizing, and collaborating a basketball tournament with over (27) Boys & Girls Clubs and (300) young people. The club has forever changed my life, it was tough to leave in 2016 to pursue my master's degree and teaching credential. In 2018, I became a full time teacher and realize during the pandemic my true passion was still working with young people at the Boys & Girls Club. I resumed my journey in March 2022 as Program Director and Head Case Management of Diplomas to Degrees. My passion to help young people meet their full potential was rekindled and I had purpose again.
